Frequently asked questions

What is the pear cut in a diamond ring?

The pear cut combines the rounded part of a round brilliant with the characteristic point of a marquise. The result is an asymmetric silhouette that visually elongates the finger and projects quite a lot of light when the proportions are well executed. The ideal length-to-width ratio is between 1.45 and 1.75: below that it looks round and loses character; above that, a central shadow effect (bow tie) may appear. At BRAVORA we select each gemstone to be perfect.

How do I know which pear cut ring proportion suits me best?

It depends on the shape of your hand. Short, slender fingers: more compact proportions (1.45–1.55) with a narrow band. Long fingers: you can carry more compact ratios (1.45–1.55) without the ring losing presence; even a halo looks great. Wide fingers: a thicker band (2–2.5 mm) or a split shank design provides visual balance, and a larger-diameter diamond with more elongated proportions (1.55–1.75). There's no universal answer. At BRAVORA we analyze it with you on a video call before designing anything.

What is the bowtie effect in pear cut diamonds and how is it avoided?

The bowtie effect is a dark bow-tie-shaped shadow that appears in the center of elongated cuts like the pear, oval, or marquise. It occurs when light escapes through the bottom of the diamond instead of reflecting toward the eye. Not all pear cut rings have it: it depends directly on how the stone has been cut. A well-proportioned diamond minimizes it almost completely. The only way to evaluate it is to see the diamond on video, from different angles and under various light sources. And that's exactly what we do with every BRAVORA ring.

How many prongs does a pear ring need so the diamond is held securely?

As many as needed to cover the tip. The standard configuration is 3 prongs (one at the point and two at the shoulders) or 5 prongs. Never 4, though 6 is fine. Settings that leave the tip exposed — which is the most vulnerable point of the pear cut and the most prone to chipping — are not safe. The tip prong should be a V-prong or a closed claw — that is the reference standard. The alternative is a bezel setting, which surrounds the entire edge.

Are pear rings good for everyday wear?

With the right setting, yes. The point of attention is the tip: if it doesn't have a V-prong for extra security or a bezel, it's the first spot that gives way with daily use. A well-designed mounting protects the tip without hiding the diamond's shape. The height of the setting also matters — too high increases the risk of snagging. In Barcelona we design every pear ring with real durability in mind. If you have questions about which setting best suits your lifestyle, let us know on a video call.
