Frequently asked questions
What is the brilliant cut in a diamond ring?
The round brilliant cut is the most studied and optimized of all diamond cuts. Its 58 facets are mathematically calculated to maximize light return — fire, brilliance, and scintillation all at once. It is the only cut with standardized cut grades from GIA and IGI, which means you can compare stones with objective criteria. That is also why it is the most popular: not because it is the safest choice, but because when well cut, no other cut projects more light.
What are Hearts & Arrows in a brilliant diamond?
It is the optical pattern that appears in brilliant diamonds cut with maximum precision. Viewed from below with a specific viewer, 8 symmetrical hearts form; from above, 8 arrows. It is not an official certification — it is a consequence of the perfect symmetry and proportions of the cut. A Hearts & Arrows diamond has fewer light leaks, more light return, and greater visual impact. Not all Excellent-graded certificates have it — it requires a level of precision above the standard. It is the real differentiator between a good brilliant and an exceptional one.
What is the difference between 4 prongs and 6 prongs on a brilliant ring?
Both configurations protect the diamond well, but they give different visual results. With 4 prongs the diamond looks larger face-up — more stone surface is exposed and the round silhouette appears sharper. With 6 prongs the diamond is more protected and the setting has more presence; the stone looks slightly smaller but the overall look is more classic. For carat weights above 1.5 ct, 6 prongs provide more structural security. Below that, it is an aesthetic decision. Neither is objectively better — it depends on the balance you want between exposure and protection.
Does the brilliant cut suit all hand types?
It is the most neutral cut of all — it neither elongates nor widens, it simply occupies visual space in a balanced way. Short fingers: a compact brilliant with a thin band (1.8–2 mm) — its circular shape doesn't overwhelm. Long fingers: you can wear a wider band and larger carats without breaking proportion; if you want to enhance the lengthening effect, oval is a better option. Wide fingers: more carats so the diamond occupies enough visual space, and a 2–2.5 mm or split shank band for balance. At BRAVORA we analyze this with you on a video call before designing anything.
Does the emerald cut suit all hand types?
They are the most frequent comparison and have more differences than they appear. The brilliant is symmetrical in all directions — neutral, classic, without orientation. The oval visually elongates the finger and has more face-up presence for the same carat weight because its surface area is larger. The oval can have a bowtie effect; the brilliant never does. If you're looking for something timeless, brilliant. If you want more visual impact with the same budget and don't mind a more careful selection process, oval.
