Frequently asked questions

What is the marquise cut in a diamond ring?

The marquise cut is an ellipse with two pointed ends. It is the fancy cut that elongates the finger the most of all — more than the oval, more than the pear — because its two points create a continuous visual line from end to end. Its facets are brilliant, not stepped, so it projects a lot of fire and light. The ideal ratio is between 1.75 and 2.15: below that it looks stubby, above that it becomes so narrow it loses visual mass. It's not a neutral cut — it has a lot of personality. It is one of the cuts with the most visual presence, appearing larger for fewer carats.

What is the bowtie effect in a marquise cut diamond?

The same problem as in the pear and the oval: a dark bow-tie-shaped shadow that appears in the center of the diamond when light escapes through the bottom instead of reflecting toward the eye. In the marquise it is especially common due to its elongated geometry. Not all marquises have it — it depends directly on how the stone is cut. A good cut minimizes it almost completely. The only way to evaluate it is to see the diamond on video, and at BRAVORA we analyze each gemstone individually.

How many prongs does a marquise ring need and where do they go?

The marquise has two vulnerable tips — both ends — and both need specific protection. The standard configuration is 6 prongs: for extra security, a V-prong at each tip and two prongs on each side. Never 4 symmetrical prongs — they would leave at least one tip without real protection. The alternative is a bezel setting that surrounds the full perimeter, but it greatly changes the aesthetic of the cut.

How many prongs does a pear ring need so the diamond is held securely?

It depends on the shape. Short fingers: compact ratio (1.75–1.85) and slim band (1.8–2 mm) — the marquise already elongates on its own, no need to exaggerate the ratio. Long fingers: compact ratio (1.75–1.90) as the natural option; if you want to enhance the elongating effect you can go to 2.00–2.15, though on very long fingers this may be excessive. Wide fingers: more elongated ratio (1.95–2.15) with more carats — the diamond needs to occupy enough visual space to balance the band. At BRAVORA we analyze it with you on a video call before designing anything.

Is the marquise ring hard to wear every day?

More so than other cuts, yes. The two tips are the most vulnerable points — any lateral impact can chip them if the setting does not protect them properly. With well-executed V-prongs at both ends the risk is minimized, but it remains a cut that requires more care than a round brilliant or an emerald. It is also a ring that catches on fabrics more because of its geometry. It is not incompatible with daily use, but it's worth being aware of. If you have a very active lifestyle, it's something worth discussing before deciding.
