Frequently asked questions

What is the oval cut in a diamond ring?

The oval cut is an elongated round brilliant — the same 58 facets, the same optical principle, but with an elongated silhouette that completely changes how the ring reads on the hand. It elongates the finger and has more face-up surface area than a round brilliant of the same carat weight — it looks larger without being so. It is one of the most in-demand cuts right now, and for good reason: it offers a lot for what it costs.

What is the bowtie effect in an oval cut diamond?

The same bow-tie-shaped shadow that appears in the pear and the marquise: a dark area in the center of the diamond where light escapes through the bottom instead of reflecting toward the eye. In the oval it is especially common because its elongated geometry favors light leakage in the center. Not all ovals have it — it depends directly on the precision of the cutting. A well-proportioned oval minimizes it almost completely. The only way to evaluate it is to see the diamond on video under different light sources. The certificate doesn't capture it. That's why, at BRAVORA, we review videos of diamonds before ordering them and check their quality in person before setting them.

What proportions should an oval cut ring have?

The ideal length-to-width ratio is between 1.30 and 1.50. Below 1.30 the oval starts to resemble a stubby brilliant and loses the elongating effect that defines it. Above 1.50 you gain elongation but the diamond becomes very narrow from the side and the risk of bowtie increases. The most balanced ratio for most people is 1.35–1.45: elongated enough to slim the finger, compact enough to retain visual mass. The ideal depth is between 58–62% to maximize light return.

Does the oval cut flatter all hand types?

It depends on the shape. Short fingers: compact ratio (1.30–1.40) and slim band (1.8–2 mm) — the oval already slims by its shape, no need to exaggerate the ratio. Long fingers: compact ratio (1.30–1.40) as the natural option; if you want to enhance the elongating effect you can go to 1.45–1.50, though on very long fingers this may be excessive. Wide fingers: more elongated ratio (1.45–1.50) with more carats — the diamond needs to occupy enough visual space to balance the band. At BRAVORA we analyze it with you on a video call before designing anything.

Is the oval cut suitable for everyday wear?

It is one of the most resistant for daily use. Without tips or angular corners, the oval has no structural vulnerability points like the pear, marquise, or princess. Its curved edges absorb impacts well and it catches on fabrics less. The standard configuration is 4 or 6 prongs — both work well as long as they properly cover the narrowest ends of the oval. A bezel setting is also an elegant option that protects the entire perimeter. It is a cut that combines aesthetic appeal with durability without compromise.
