Frequently asked questions

What is the radiant cut?

The radiant cut combines the rectangular or square shape of the emerald cut with the brilliant facets of a round diamond. The result is the brightest non-round cut — 70 facets that project color dispersion and white light in every direction.

What is the difference between the radiant cut and the emerald cut?

Both are rectangular, but completely different in character. The emerald cut has step facets — it projects clarity, depth, and broad flashes, but demands better clarity quality because it shows the inside of the diamond without filters. The radiant cut has brilliant facets — it hides inclusions better and projects far more fire and movement. If you're looking for elegance and clean lines, emerald. If you want a rectangular shape with the brilliance of a round diamond, radiant. They appeal to very different buyers, and people rarely have trouble choosing between them once they see both together.

What is the bowtie effect in a radiant cut diamond?

It appears in elongated rectangular versions (ratio 1.25–1.35) when the cut is not well-proportioned: a dark shadow crosses the center of the diamond because light escapes through the bottom instead of reflecting toward the eye. In square radiants it is practically nonexistent. In rectangular ones it depends directly on how the stone was cut — it is not a clarity defect, it is a cutting problem. The only way to evaluate it is to see the diamond on video under different light sources. The certificate does not specify it. That is why at BRAVORA we inspect every gem on every ring before setting it.

Does the radiant cut suit all hand types?

It depends on your hand shape and the ratio chosen. Short fingers: a square or barely rectangular ratio (1.00–1.20) with a thin band — avoid very elongated rectangulars. Long fingers: a compact ratio (1.00–1.15) as the natural option; if you want to enhance the lengthening effect you can go up to 1.25–1.35. Wide fingers: a more rectangular ratio (1.25–1.35) with more carats — you need the diamond to occupy enough visual space to balance the band. At BRAVORA we analyze this with you on a video call before designing anything.

Do the corners of the radiant cut get damaged with daily wear?

This is one of its strengths. Unlike the princess cut, whose right-angle corners are vulnerable to chipping, the radiant has truncated corners — a natural bezel that absorbs impacts better. It doesn't require mandatory L-shaped prongs and is one of the most durable fancy cuts for everyday wear. The standard configuration is 4 prongs, one on each corner, with good coverage on the truncated edge. If you have questions about which setting best fits your lifestyle, tell us on a video call.

How many carats do I need in a radiant cut to make it look good?

The radiant has more depth than other cuts — part of the weight is hidden in the bottom of the diamond. This means a 1 ct radiant engagement ring looks slightly smaller face-up than an oval or pear of the same weight. As a reference, a 1 ct square radiant measures approximately 5.5 mm per side; a 1 ct rectangular one is around 6.5 × 5 mm. If the face-up diameter matters to you, it's worth seeing it in a real context before deciding by weight on paper. In a consultation we'll show you with specific examples.
