Frequently asked questions

What is the princess cut in a ring?

The princess cut is a square with right-angle corners and brilliant facets — the square cut with the most fire and light movement that exists. Its ideal ratio is between 1.00 and 1.05: above that it starts to look rectangular and loses the defining proportion. In face-up surface area it outperforms a round brilliant of the same weight — the round sacrifices more in depth. But compared to elongated cuts like the oval, pear, or marquise, the princess takes up less visual space per carat. It is a cut that wins hearts with its geometry, not its apparent size.

What is the difference between the princess cut and the radiant cut?

Both are brilliant squares, but with different character. The princess has right-angle corners — more geometric, more visually sharp. The radiant has truncated corners — softer, safer for daily use. In brilliance they are similar, although the radiant has more facets. The most important practical difference is durability: the corners of the princess are the most vulnerable point of the cut and require specific protection. If you want the cleanest, most geometric square, princess. If you prioritize resistance without giving up the shape, radiant, but there is no universal answer. At BRAVORA we analyze it with you on a video call if you need it.

Can the corners of the princess cut get damaged?

It is the most critical point of the cut. The right-angle corners are the most vulnerable to chipping with lateral impacts — and unlike the pear or marquise, there are four risk points, not one or two. The most durable solution is an L-prong at each corner: a prong that embraces the right angle rather than just pinching the edge. Regular prongs also provide protection — what is NOT recommended is leaving the corners exposed. A bezel or semi-bezel setting also protects them completely. Before choosing a mounting for a princess cut, always verify that all four corners are covered.

What clarity does a princess cut diamond need?

More tolerant than the emerald, less demanding than a round brilliant. Its brilliant facets disperse the light and hide inclusions better than step cuts. In practice, a well-selected VS2 works perfectly — inclusions are hidden under the play of facets. SI1 is viable if inclusions are not in the center or near the corners, but at BRAVORA we always work with VS diamonds by default. What does matter is avoiding inclusions in the corners: they are the most fragile point of the cut and an inclusion in that area increases the risk of chipping.

Does the princess cut flatter all hand types?

It depends on your hand shape. Short fingers: a square princess (ratio 1.00–1.05) with a thin band (1.8–2 mm) works well — its compact shape doesn't shorten the finger further. Long fingers: the pure square looks well-proportioned; you can wear a wider band without losing balance. Wide fingers: more carats so the diamond takes up enough visual space, and a 2–2.5 mm or split shank band for balance. At BRAVORA we analyze this with you — tell us in a video call.
