Frequently asked questions

What is the cushion cut in a diamond ring?

The cushion cut is a square or rectangle with rounded corners and brilliant facets — a shape that has been in jewelry for over a century and remains one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. Its softened edges give it a romantic, organic character that no other square cut has. It comes in a square version (ratio 1.00–1.05) and a rectangular version (1.10–1.30), and within each version there are two types of faceting that completely change how it projects light.

What is the difference between a brilliant cushion and a modified cushion?

This is the most important technical question about the cushion cut and the one that is least explained. The brilliant cushion has facets organized similarly to the round brilliant — it projects diffuse fire, broad flashes, and a soft, enveloping shine. The modified cushion has an extra row of facets at the bottom that creates a fragmented, more intense, sparkling light pattern — visually similar to the crushed ice effect. Neither is better: they are different aesthetics. The modified shows up more in photography; the brilliant looks better in motion and natural light. If you're unsure, at BRAVORA we'll help you decide.

What is the difference between the cushion cut and the radiant cut?

Both are brilliant squares with non-angular corners, but the result is different. The cushion has rounded corners and a softer, more romantic character — its silhouette is organic. The radiant has truncated corners at an angle — more geometric, more contemporary. In brilliance, the radiant projects more fire and sparkle; the cushion has a more enveloping, warm shine. The cushion retains diamond color better — in G–H tones it can appear slightly warmer than an equivalent radiant. If you're looking for classic romance, cushion. If you want modern geometry with maximum brilliance, radiant.

Does the cushion cut flatter all hand types?

It depends on the shape. Short fingers: square ratio (1.00–1.05) and slim band (1.8–2 mm) — the rounded corners are more gentle than the princess but equally compact. Avoid rectangular versions that elongate without elegance. Long fingers: the pure square looks very well-proportioned; you can go to slightly more rectangular ratios (1.10–1.20) without losing balance. Wide fingers: more carats so the diamond occupies enough visual space, and a 2–2.5 mm band or split shank. At BRAVORA we analyze it with you on a video call before designing anything.

What proportions should a cushion cut ring have?

For the square version, ratio between 1.00 and 1.05 — above that it starts to read as rectangular and loses the defining proportion. For the rectangular version, between 1.10 and 1.30 — above that it becomes too elongated and the cushion loses its character. The ideal depth is between 61–67%: the cushion tends to be deeper than other cuts, which means part of the weight is in the bottom and the diamond may appear smaller face-up for its carat weight.
